| Our classes have been ongoing since 1991 in the Cary area. Class instructors are very experienced and can individualize training to the dog's specific needs when necessary. These are not "cookie cutter" classes for dogs are different just as people are different. Our classes are competitively priced. The 8 week course is $100.00 and includes a class devoted to how dogs learn and the proper way for owners to teach their dogs. It also includes a manual, which has been written by Sherry Dodson, CPDT (Certified Pet Dog Trainer). The manual not only discusses training but also theory because we feel it is essential that owners understand why the dog is doing what it is doing. Each class is one hour in length. Our classes are recommended by veterinarians, technicians, groomers, former class members and we are blessed with many returning clients who have new additions to their families. Our classes are offered in the Cary area and Pittsboro. | ||||||

Our Philosophy: Dogs are not furry people. Animals learn differently than humans. It is our firm belief that dogs should be kindly, carefully and consistently taught how to live in our society. Dogs think and understand from the canine perspective. Dogs should never be reprimanded for what we view as their mistakes if they have not been taught how to live in our world. We also believe that many behavioral problems are a result of the dog's confusion over what is expected. It is up to us, as responsible pet owners, to prevent a dog's confusion. This can be accomplished when we Start Them Right. |

Sherry Dodson, CPDT | After retirement from a medical career as a Certified Family Nurse Practitioner, Sherry Dodson began Start Them Right, Inc. in June 2000. At that time, the incorporation and development of her business was the culmination of over 23 years of working with dogs in a number of different capacities. Sherry has trained dogs in obedience, tracking, field work and agility. Since 1985, she has served in a volunteer capacity as Area Coordinator for the North Carolina Puppy Raising Program of Guiding Eyes for the Blind. In addition to the responsibilities of Area Coordinator, she has raised four puppies for Guiding Eyes. Sherry has been teaching Puppy Kindergarten, Beginner Classes, Canine Good Citizen and Advanced classes at Northwoods Animal Hospital since 1991 and continues to teach there and at other animal hospitals in the area. Therapy Dog classes is the latest addition in conjunction with COPE Eldercare. She currently has three active therapy dogs. Sherry is a Certified Pet Dog Trainer through the Certification Council for Pet Dog Trainers and is a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers. She and her husband live on a small farm where their lives are blessed with 4 dogs, 3 cats and 2 horses. Sherry firmly believes that a deep, positive, trusting relationship with our dogs, and really all animals, is the cornerstone of any training. They enrich our lives so much and she feels it is essential that we do all we can to understand and train them."> | |||||
